Advantages of paper bags, also for the planet

The advantages of the paper bag over the plastic ones are many and the new generation not only does not destroy forests, but creates them.

Why paper bag as a more ecological alternative?

The ถุงคราฟท์, in general, is more ecological than the plastic bag for three good reasons: It gives less CO2 to the air, it is biodegradable and it is easier to recycle.

Advantages of using the paper bag

Let’s break down the three main advantages mentioned and let us know some more, not only for the environment but for the user. Although we must take into account that we refer to the new generation of ecological paper bags, which must meet a series of standards.

  • The paper bag is made to hold a lot of weight, a little more than 2 Kg for small ones and up to 14 Kg for larger ones.
  • The new generation of paper bags withstand the humidity generated by transporting refrigerated or frozen items.
  • For companies that want to advertise with their logo the paper bag allows more colourful or elegant designs than plastic ones. It is statistically proven that a paper bag with a good design draws the attention of passers-by.
  • The law of environmental management makes republic land disowned for the cultivation of trees in order to obtain cellulose to make paper. These lands become new forests that must be managed in a sustainable manner.
  • This same law requires that 4 more trees be planted for each cut tree, becoming new lungs in the fight against CO2 and global warming.
  • The ecological paper bag is biodegradable and degrades in three or six months without leaving toxic residues.

Disadvantages of the paper bag

As we said in the first section, not in all cases the paper bags are easily recyclable, nor contribute a decrease in CO2. We refer to the old generation of this product, whose manufacture and use were not designed in a sustainable way.

The current ones do not have in principle any disadvantage to highlight, except the limits that put the own ecological conscience of the users. Provided that the norm of planting in barren areas is met and the ecosystem is not changed by introducing species rich in cellulose into the forests, converting them into monocultures of conifers, eucalyptus, etc.

While the traditional paper bag has multiple environmental disadvantages and are less resistant to the consumer. Let’s see some of the most important:

  • Making a traditional paper bag requires four times more energy than for a plastic bag.
  • By not adhering to the rules of wood sustainability, the manufacture of traditional paper bags produce an environmental impact through deforestation. For example, in 1999, 14 million trees were cut down to make 10 billion of these bags.
  • It takes 91% more energy to recycle half a kilo of paper than plastic and traditional paper takes one to two years to get rid of.
